*Jiangnan Hundred Bed Museum
Jiangnan Hundred Bed Museum is also called Zhao’s Hall. Inside are over 20 old beds from Ming, Qing, and modern times. This is first museum in China to specialize in collecting and exhibiting old beds. The 1000 Labor Bed form the Qing dynasty stands out in particular. Also called “the town hall bed,” it is carved from yellow poplar and separated into three overlapping parts. This bed derives its name from the 3 years time and “1000 labors” it took to carve.
While it may not have a large quantity of exhibits, the Hundred Bed Museum’s poignancy lies in the fine appreciation of how deeply each bed is imbued with history and life. Whether these beds were carved in search of peace or posterity, they bring peace and happiness. This was the mindset of the ancient Chinese people.
*Yuelao Temple
Located on the side of the road along the scenic tour bus route in west Wuzhen, this temple’s outward appearance doesn’t catch the eye, nor is it particularly big. In fact, it is rather small. However, it has become popular for answering the prayers of the fainthful. Its long history and ways to make prayers come true has established itself through legends and folk tales, earning the temple a great degree of local prestige.
*The Old Post Office
Wuzhen has an established history in postal service. In the Tang Dynasty, Wuzhen was a well-developed, flourishing site of trade and commerce. The Grand Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou passed through here. Because Wuzhen was a site where news and information were frequently exchanged with the outside world, Wuzhen garnered more trade dealings. This led Wuzhen to flourish economically and become a site of economic prosperity.
